.:. Government hails Toyota Malawi for Mzuzu Branch project

Government says infrastructure plays a vital role in the development of any nation. Deputy Minister of Transport, Public Works and Housing Roy Comsy made the remarks during the Toyota Malawi official ground breaking ceremony in Mzuzu on Monday. "Government agenda need a strong back-up and support. For development to flourish anywhere, transport and in-frastructure play a vital role hence problems of vehicle service hinder the achievement of any sort of development strides," said Comsy.

He said the opening of a service centre in Mzuzu is a welcomed development, adding that this will help to create employment opportunities to the people of the Northern Region not only in the construction but manning the new structure.

The deputy minister said this will also boost tax collection thereby significantly contributing to the development of the country. Speaking at the function, Toyota Malawi Limited managing director Rosemary Mkandawire said the construction of the Mzuzu branch will mean better services. "Now, our valued customers, you do not have to drive 800 kilometres [to Blantyre] to have your vehicle serviced.

With the construction of this branch we give you our solemn promise not to take you for granted but to serve you better," said Mkandawire. She also applauded government for providing the private sector with a conducive environment to work and expressed hope that it will continue to encourage more investment into the country.

Mkandawire said Toyota Malawi shareholders— Toyota Tsusho Corporation of Japan—approved the construction of the branch to the tune of US$2 million because it is in the spirit of Toyota Corporation philosophy of putting the customer first.

Taking his turn, engineer ing manager Mwiza Mtawali said this is a dream-come-true to people who have been spending an average of K120,000 travelling to and from Lilongwe just to have their vehicles serviced.

The construction work is expected to be completed within one year.
