Toyota Malawi Limited on 16th December 2009 donated MK 2,000,000 to the National Team as contribution towards the Flames 2010 Angola Africa Cup of Nations fundraising campaign. The donation comes as a response to Football Association of Malawi’s plea to the corporate world for assistance in preparations for the tournament.
Malawi is in Group A of the tournament where it will play against the hosts, Angola, Mali and Algeria in January. FAM had put their budget at MK 96, 000,000 but government could only afford MK 56, 000,000.
During the function which took place at Toyota Malawi Head Office, the Chief Executive Officer Rosemary Mkandawire said although the contribution is humble considering the needs, if other companies can come forward and donate such an amount it could do a lot in helping the national team achieve its goals in Angola.
The Youth Development and Sports Minister Luscious Kanyumbu praised Toyota Malawi for the “sense of good will” and urged other companies to emulate Toyota Malawi and help raise the
MK 30,000,000 shortfall.
