.:. Karonga wins Toyota golf

August 28 2009

A score of 39 points was enough for Zomba based golfer Willet Karonga to scoop the top prize in the lucrative Toyota Malawi Golf tournament played over the weekend at Kasasa Golf Course in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota.

The tournament, which was played on individual stableford format, attracted a field of 56 golfers from Mzuzu, Kasungu, Lilongwe, Zomba, Blantyre and the hosts. Filled with joy, Karonga gave a 10-mmute speech, which kept both golfers and sponsors laughing. "I can't believe it. I thank Toyota Malawi for sponsoring this wonderful event," said Karonga.

The Zomba based Karonga advised fellow golfers to buy spare parts from Toyota Malawi and not from other shops, saying the parts from Toyota were genuine and reliable. On second position was Kaingwe with a score of 37 points. He got a Samsung TV screen and a trophy. Third-placed Kondwani Mphullah from Kasasa, who scored 35 points, received a DVD home theatre plus a trophy. Other men's prizes went to Sung Phil Cho (nearest the pin), Medson Roka (longest drive), Luke Sibale (best front) and Feneck Gama (best back). Tamara Tembo from the host club utilised home ground advantage to win the ladies' top prize of a washing machine with 32 points.

Lusubilo Chakaniza, also from Dwangwa, came second with 30 points. She received a microwave oven and a trophy. Chakaniza won the nearest to the pin prize in ladies category. Jeke Chipofya from Blantyre played the most golf but was absent during the prize presentation prompting Club captain Dan Mvula to transfer the prize of air-flow golf balls to Evilasio Mwale from Mzuzu, who was next from the bottom.

Toyota Malawi's Branch Manager for Lilongwe Louis Du Plessis, Sales Manager Newton Mlagha and Senior Brands Manager Phoebe Chitimba took turns thanking the golfers for gracing the tournament. The managers also saluted the Kasasa Golf Club committee for the good organisation of the tournament and Dwangwa Sugar Corporation for hosting the guests. The sponsors paid out green fees for all the participating golfers and also donated a K50,000 cheque for maintaining the greens.
